Choosing a perfume has always been quite personal and will remain so. Perhaps you adore a scent because it evokes a particular memory or time of year. For more than ten years, you may have been wearing the same signature perfume. Or perhaps you are adamant that the secret to smelling good is understanding how to apply perfume. In any event, the top fragrances of 2024 will give your expanding collection a pleasant new aroma profile.
Every scent family is represented in this year’s top new fragrance releases, including Future Society’s stunning florals, Hermès’ contemporary take on the traditional oud, and By Kilian’s smoky, tobacco-hinted combination, Born to Be Unforgettable. The best mild summertime fragrances and citrus scents are also available. Nonetheless, the citrus and gourmand notes are the ones that are getting the most attention.
Mandarin, lemon, and grapefruit have all been given sophisticated twists by everyone from Aerin and Armani to Perfums de Marly. These side-swipe the undesirable chemical-tinged undertone since they are a tad warmer than the citrus combinations that came before them. Intoxicating variations of vanilla may be found on the opposite end of the spectrum, with Glossier, Victoria Beckham, and Infiniment Coty incorporating warmth into their fall launches.
The editors at Marie Claire are revealing our top picks for 2024 perfume releases to assist you in selecting which new fragrance should be added to your collection. You may be sure that we are just providing the greatest perfumes because we have tested every single fragrance introduction since the beginning of 2024 (there are over 100 fragrances, by the way).
Aerin Amber Musk Santal Eau De Parfum
I highly recommend trying Aerin’s new take on the iconic smell, Amber Musk Santal, if you’ve been a long-time admirer of the brand’s Amber Musk, which was first introduced in 2013 and won a Marie Claire Fragrance Award. There is an earthy, grounding basis, much like in the original. However, adding santal gives a touch of brightness and an additional tingling feeling.
Notes: Santal, musk, and amber
Review for MC: “I adore this fragrance so strongly that I’ve already used up a full bottle. It is the perfect transitional perfume for autumn because it is both warm and crisp. It’s warm, comforting, and something I want to be enveloped in all the time, much like a cashmere blanket. — Beauty Editor Samantha Holender
Valentino Anatomy of Dreams – Sogno in Rosso Parfum 100ml
Valentino’s latest fragrance, which has been named one of our favourite luxury scents for female, is a popular choice for date night wear. Although it has a strong spicy flavour, the combination of vanilla bourbon and black pepper gives it a smooth basis. It is sensual and sexy, just like the bottle. You’ll be completely on board with the autumn fragrance trend with just one spritz of this.
Notes: quality vanilla bourbon infusion, juniper berry essence, and black pepper
Review for MC: “When Valentino brought a few editors to Paris in July to see the new Anatomy of Dreams collection, I was given a first look at Sogno in Rosso. I think I’ve been completely enamoured ever since. It has a tinge of spice and is creamy and smooth. It melts delightfully into the skin and lingers till I wash it off, and it smells like nothing I’ve ever smelt. An added bonus is that it blends incredibly nicely with many different scents. — Contributing Beauty Writer Kayla Greaves
Merit Retrospect™ L’extrait De Parfum
Presenting Merit cosmetics in fragrance form. Retrospect, like the brand’s swipe-and-go complexion solutions, is simple, non-offensive, and effective for nearly everyone. This aroma is clean, skin-centric, and distinctively you, even though it belongs to the warm and spicy fragrance family. We also think it’s one of the best October beauty launches.
Notes: musk, jasmine, and bergamont
Review for MC: “This new Merit release was perfect. I’m constantly searching for a scent that gives off a sensuous, sexy atmosphere without ever feeling stuffy or heavy. Since it’s a concentrated extrait de parfum, the perfume lasts all day, so you’ll be able to smell the vanilla, pear, and jasmine notes hours after you first spritz. It’s rich and flowery, with a touch of fruity brightness, and warm without ever being overly sweet. — Beauty Director Hannah Baxter
Infiniment Coty Paris Encore Une Fois Eau de Parfum
My favourite fall scent will always be this one. The gourmand, vanilla scent is not only reassuring (and addictive), but because to the fragrance’s technology, it may linger for up to 30 hours, which is a significant victory in my opinion.
Notes: Peru balsam, vanilla bourbon, and vanilla planifolia
Review for MC: “My favourite scent trend of 2024 is without a doubt the vanilla revival. A nice addition to my current scent collection are richer, more elegant versions of the profile that got me through middle and high school. I’ve come to rely on this specific scent for layering. To fully highlight the creamy, nearly milky base, I double it up with other vanilla scents, such as DS & Durga’s Deep Dark Vanilla. — Beauty Editor Samantha Holender
Victoria Beckham Beauty 21:50 Rêverie Eau De Parfum
When Victoria Beckham and I discussed her Augustinus Bader X Victoria Beckham Beauty Concealer Pen last month, she hinted at this launch. However, it wasn’t until I really got my hands on it that I realised how delicious the scent would be. According to Posh Spice: “So far, this is my favourite. It has a vanilla flavour without being overly sugary. I’m confident that it will become the new favourite of everyone because it is genderless.
Notes: Tonka bean, cedarwood, and vanilla
Review for MC: “To be completely honest, I’m not often a fan of celebrity fragrances. But for the past several weeks, I’ve been obsessed with this scent that’s ideal for autumn and winter. I only need one or two sprays because it’s very rich and comforting. This is quite calming, so I prefer to spritz it before going to bed at night. — Beauty Editor Samantha Holender
Tom Ford Neroli Portofino Eau De Parfum Fragrance
The packaging of this fragrance was so beautiful that I first bought it. The gold plating and turquoise case gave my vanity a touch of refinement. Nevertheless, the aroma within made me want to spray this delicious and citrussy scent daily, and it ended up on my list of favourite summer scents. My nose is awakened by the powerful scents of lemon, bergamot, and neroli after the first tingly spritz. After about fifteen minutes, the glittering thrill fades and gives way to a powerful yet clean aroma. (Also check out the greatest Tom Ford fragrances ever!)
Notes: Italian bergamot, Sicilian lemon, and Tunisian neroli
Customer Review: “This stuff has the scent of a far-flung summer getaway.” I haven’t yet treated myself to a bottle; I’ve only ever had samples. I’ve only had to touch it up after hours during the day and into the night because it lasts a long time on me. Unfortunately, it’s pricey, but I adore how it smells on me! — Sephora
Bottega Veneta Come With Me – Eau De Parfum in Deep Red
These Bottega Veneta scents live up to the hype, we said. It should come as no surprise that the presentation of the opulent five-piece collection was much anticipated, given it has been in the works for 57 years. Come With Me was Baxter’s favourite smell, although they’re all lovely. “It’s a little more robust and powdery than I typically like my fragrance choices to be, but all it took was ten minutes of marinating on my skin to change my mind,” she said. Finally, the Italian bergamot surfaced to combine with the violet-leaning orris butter to provide a rich, sensuous, and intense mix. When I go out to a dark club with plenty of vintage leather banquets and sloppy martinis, I can’t wait to wear this.”
Glossier You Doux Eau De Parfum
“Glossier Doux comes to mind when I think of quiet luxury,” Weiss told Marie Claire at an exclusive preview held in New York City. “That’s the Khaite girl, the Row, and the Tôteme.” With its earthy palo santo, sweet iris, frankincense, and myrrh notes, the woody blend is a gentle, skin-like fragrance that has (naturally) gone viral.
Notes: Ambrox, palo santo, and sweet violet
Customer Review: “Glossier’s new fragrance is just fantastic. Generally speaking, I don’t like earthy or woodsy scents, and I also don’t like sweet ones. But I’m pleasantly amazed at how enthralling this perfume is. Because of their flawless balance, each note adds depth without overpowering or overpowering the others. It’s an amazing combination. — Sephora
Liis In This World
According to Associate E-Commerce Editor Brooke Knappenberger, “this fragrance would be what you would get if you were to bottle up the best scents of nature.” This perfume, appropriately named ‘In This World,’ is a blend of floral, woody, and herbal notes that create a subtle yet elegant fragrance. As it dries, earthy notes of lavender, sage, and Tonka wood replace the fruity notes of blood orange and fig that initially hit you when you apply it. Additionally, it has a really soothing scent, which would be ideal for springtime when you’re looking for something lighter and more fresh.
Notes: tonka wood, sage, violet, lavender, fig, eucalyptus, and blood orange
Client Comment: “Wow! This has such a chic and clean scent. woody citrus. It’s what I think a forest fairie might dress up as if she were posing as a person and working in an office. — Scent Ministry
Escentric Molecules Eau De Toilette Spray Unisex, molecule 03, 3.5 Fl Oz
For those who are unfamiliar, Escentric Molecules focusses on identifying distinctive single notes and combining them into a chic aroma. With just three molecules to their name, they are quite picky. Vetiveryl Acetate, a hybrid component that softens the typically warmer note with a hint of acetic acid, gives their most recent product a spicy-meets-earth blend while highlighting the fresh grassiness of vetiver. On days when I’m stuck in an office, I can feel a little more connected to nature because of its cosy, woodsy composition.
Hermès Oud Alezan Eau de Parfum
The newest member of the Hermessence family is the perfect example of juxtaposition, contrasting the delicate sweetness of rose with the deepness and weight of oud. Christine Nagel, the perfumer for Hermès, once told Marie Claire, “This is not a perfume for somebody who doesn’t like to assert themselves.” This powerful and demanding scent nearly fills a room before you do. However, after sitting on the skin, the note takes on a more mystical, softer tone, so it’s not the harsh oud that’s sometimes familiar with it.
Killian Born to Be Unforgettable Eau De Parfum 50ml
Killian’s Born to be Unforgettable, which falls somewhere between the citrus, gourmand, and spicy fragrance families, has one of the most intriguing perfume profiles I’ve tasted this year. It’s always changing on my skin. When it settles completely, I get a grounding base of cedarwood, a tinge of warm cinnamon, and perhaps a whiff of lime. It was intended to smell like boiling Coca-Cola, and I can state with confidence that it succeeds in that endeavour. What’s my primary takeaway? When I wear it on the street, people will stop me.
Parfums de Marly Perseus Eau de Parfum
Even in the summer, I don’t usually like citrussy smells. “They never feel as balanced as their more flora, woody, or musky counterparts, and their sweetness always strikes me as saccharine and even nausea-inducing,” writes Gabrielle Ulubay, a former Beauty Writer. She changed her mind after trying one of the best new smells of the year. However, Parfums de Marly’s latest offering finds the ideal equilibrium. Indeed, bergamot, blackberry, and grapefruit make up its top notes. However, the fruity components are counterbalanced by the warmth and woodiness of cashmere wood, balsam fir, tonka bean, and dry woods. The combination is ideal for this time of year, when the sun is sinking later and spring is almost here, and it is anything but sickly sweet.
Charlotte Tilbury Joyphoria Eau De Parfum
Charlotte Tilbury is intent on dominating beauty. I personally love her skincare and beauty lines, and now her six recently released scents are causing a stir. Uncertain about which feeling to seize? Halie LeSavage, Senior News Editor for Beauty and Fashion, suggests Joyphoria, a scent that evokes feelings of happiness. “When I had stacked days of doctor’s appointments and budgeting conversations with my husband—places where I expected to be put in a less-than-sunny mood,” she says, “Joyphoria’s warm florals were my shortcut to (temporary) happiness.”
Future Society Optimal Habitat Fragrance Enhancing Primer
Future Society is a genuinely inventive company that revives scent profiles, and I find them to be incredibly fascinating. In particular, they use DNA sequencing and biotechnology to replicate the aura of extinct flowers. Their most recent offering is a primer rather than a fragrance. Aeonome, a biotech component, powers the moisturising, slightly sticky lotion. Your preferred scent lasts for hours longer than usual because it balances the pH of the skin.
